Exploring the delicious world of sweet rolls
Heavenly, fluffy sweet rolls are not only a hit on Instagram and TikTok, but they are also a fantastic project for any baker (and any enthusiastic eater!). Of all the yeasted doughs to bake, sweet rolls are some of the simplest and most user-friendly. With our step-by-step guide, and a few handy tips and hacks, these delicious treats are effortless to make.
Sweden is culinary famous for its Cinnamon Buns (or Kanelbullar). The American-style Cinnamon Rolls are quite similar, but I find them to be much more lightly spiced, much softer in texture, and much sweeter thanks to the addition of a generous glaze or even a cream cheese frosting.
Cinnamon buns probably started this baking trend, but the deliciously airy sweet rolls are currently conquering the world with its vast varieties to choose from. No wonder, the combination of butter, sugar, and eggs in the yeast dough, in combination with the classic cinnamon filling promises a special treat. The good news: you can pick the dough according to your dietary preferences and switch up the filling according to your personal taste.

Our step-by-step guide for yeast buns
1. Once you’ve prepared and kneaded the dough it’s time to allow the dough to rise.
Tip: If you have an oven with steam support, such as the Bosch 4, 6 and 8 series, you can even speed up the rising time. Thanks to the integrated addition of steam in the automatic program DOUGH PROVE, the yeast dough rises faster than at room temperature and the surface does not dry out.
Our BetterFood Benefit: We have integrated this program in the recipe for your networked Bosch oven. Due to the added steam, you may need to add 1 or 2 tablespoon of flour after the rising time. Simply knead it into the dough and continue by following the recipes instructions.
2. Roll out the dough into a large rectangle. Spread the filling.
3. Roll up the dough into a tight roll. Use your sharpest knife to cut into 4cm pieces.
Dental floss is great way to slice your rolls - nothing crushes or tears. In my opinion, this method worked better than any knife. To do this, place a long piece of dental floss under the roll of dough, cross it over the top and pull in the opposite direction. However, my favourite way to roll up sweet rolls is using a pizza cutter. All you have to do is slide the pizza cutter across the unrolled dough. Once you've sliced the dough up, you can roll each strip into a perfectly shaped cinnamon roll.
4. Line a baking tin with parchment paper. Carefully place the sweet rolls in the baking tin.
5. Bake in the middle of the oven for about 25 minutes.
Tip: A special oven program including the addition of steam is integrated in the BetterFood recipe. This means, your oven will set the time perfectly and add just the right amount of steam. This gives the yeast dough rolls a beautiful shiny surface and a dough that is moist and fluffy on the inside.
6. Spread the frosting onto the sweet rolls.
Tips for making the sweet rolls ahead of time
No one loves getting up extra early to get started on the dough. I typically make the dough the night before and allow it to rise slowly in the fridge overnight. The longer proofing time has the added benefit of allowing the dough to develop more flavour and a better texture. Come the morning, the dough will have at least doubled in size, and it will be ready for shaping.
Alternatively bake the rolls ahead of time. The rolls freeze beautifully, so this is a great make-ahead recipe, especially for holiday season or your next party. Place cooled cinnamon rolls in a Ziplock bag and store them in the freezer for up to 2 months. If possible, keep them unfrosted.
Tip: The DEFROST function in Bosch ovens uses steam to gently defrost the sweet rolls.
How to store
Keep leftovers in a sealable container, in the refrigerator. They will keep well for up to 5 days. Any longer and the glaze will begin to seep into the rolls.
Use the REHEAT function in your Bosch oven. The steam transfers the heat very gently, meaning it doesn't dry out and tastes almost just as good as freshly baked.
